The Lucia Lodge occupies land pioneered and settled by the Harlan family and is now operated by family's fifth generation. Wilbur Harlan homesteaded an expanse here in 1895. His sister-in-law, Lucia Dani, was named after the Santa Lucia mountain range. As an adult, she served as the area's postmistress. For lack of a better postal workers of the time would just say "send it to Lucia." The name stuck and the community took her name
The historic and beautiful Limekiln Creek is located 2 miles south of Lucia. Around the 1800's this area buzzed with activity as ships waiting off-shore were supplied with tanbark and lime from this spectacular canyon. You can still find the giant kilns by taking a half-mile hike through this redwood-lined canyon.
Lucia sits mid-way between Monterey and Cambria on the Central Coast's spectacular Big Sur coastline. The cliffs of Lucia offer an awesome view south to the prominent Lopez Point. Lucia offers a small cluster of services featuring the Lucia Lodge, a historic cliff-side resort offering ten rustic cabins in three different styles. Its restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. The lodge was built in the 1930's and was completed even before the Coast Highway reached its location.
Whales are often sighted from Lucia as they migrate between Mexico and Alaska . Sea otters and sea lions also frequent the kelp bed directly below. Look up and you may see eagles, as well as endangered California condor and peregrine falcons.
Harlan Ranch Sold. A group called the Big Sur Preservation Alliance has purchased the property for nearly $13 million. The Big Sur Preservation Alliance is an LLC formed by Santa Monica businessman Adam C. Hall and a partner. The sale was handled by John Saar Properties. Hall plans to build a small, low-impact home on the 395-acre property just north of Lucia. For the past 122 years, the Harlan Ranch has been owned by the same family that homesteaded it. Wilbur Judson Harlan came to Big Sur on foot in 1885. The 25-year-old settler soon staked out a homesteading claim, built a hand-hewn redwood cabin and married Ada Amanda Dani, the daughter of another prominent homesteader.
Nearby there is a beautiful hike to the New Camaldoli Monastery located above Lucia. Round trip to the top will take from 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
