A  jewel of the Central Coast, the Salmon Creek trailhead is located 3.7
miles north of
Ragged Point in Big Sur, just past the Monterey County line.
Pull over at the bottom of the deep switchback and take the pleasant
10-minute bay-scented hike down to Salmon Creek Falls. The water
plunges more than 100 feet off the Santa Lucia mountains onto the rocks
and pools below.  A tremendous amount of water plunges from three
chutes surrounded by a misty canopy of laurel and alder.
Across the creek to the south, a signed trailhead indicates Coast Ridge
Road. The right fork of the steep trail at the junction will take you to Spruce
Camp, Estrella Camp and the headwaters of the falls. Both camps feature
tent sites and fire rings. You will enjoy sweeping views as you gain three
creek, with its many small waterfalls and pools. The trail then ascends
toward Coast Ridge Road. Several trail areas are eroded away, so
proceed with care.
There is another trailhead at the deserted ranger station just
north of the pullout. These trails are fairly overgrown and are
for experienced hikers. Come prepared, bring water and you
will experience lush riparian environments, magnificent views
of the coast and Santa Lucia mountains, and numerous
creeks and waterfalls.
The Soda Springs fork will bring you to the Soda Springs
trailhead just north on Highway 1.
The Buckeye Trail will take you to Buckeye Camp. (3.5 miles)
The camp has a developed spring, picnic bench and rock fire
pit under a canopy of an immense bay laurel tree.
You will also pass a 30-foot waterfall.
If you keep going another 2.3 miles, you will reach Upper
Cruikshank Camp.
Again, we stress this is The Silver Peak Wilderness. The
country is rough and dangerous. Please, do not hike
alone, and always let someone know where you are.

These hiking trails are for the hardy and poison oak abounds. The most southerly remaining natural redwood groves
are fifteen miles north in Prewitt Canyon, but there are a few scattered redwoods at Salmon Creek.
