Moonstone Beach
Leffingwell Landing, Moonstone Beach Drive, and the Santa Rosa
Creek access in northern Cambria.
You can walk a beautiful boardwalk trail that begins at Shamel Park
(Windsor Boulevard North) 1.9 miles north to Leffingwell Landing on
Moonstone Beach. You will encounter numerous sea birds, occasional
sea otters, and seasonal migrating California Gray Whales. Harbor
seals loll on the offshore rocks, while California ground squirrels scurry
underfoot. There are also wonderful tidepools.
Begin at Leffingwell Landing, north parking area, across from Moonstone
Gardens and Hamlet Restaurant. Walk north on trail past Leffingwell
Landing, down the steps to the beach, and to walk north to San Simeon
Creek at San Simeon State Park. (Approximately 1 mile). Leffingwell
Landing State Picnic Grounds on Moonstone Beach Drive also has
barbecue areas and picnic tables. Dogs are allowed on leash.
A free trolley runs the length of Moonstone Beach Drive (and on to
Cambria) for an optional ride back to your hotel. There are many upscale
hotels,Bed & Breakfast Inns and restaurants lining Moonstone Drive.
Lodging.
The pebbly beach is a great place for rock hounding. Keep a sharp eye for
moonstones, opalescent little beauties from which the area takes its
name.
