Highway 1
State Route 1, usually called Highway 1,  runs
along a large length of the Pacific coast of the
state of California. It features some of the most
beautiful coastline scenery in the world, leading
to its designation as an All-American Road.
Highway 1 splits from US 101 at San Luis Obispo and resumes as Cabrillo Highway continuing north as a freeway
through
Morro Bay and Cayucos until it again becomes a winding, two lane road with occasional passing lanes. It
follows along the coast through
San Simeon and to the cliffs of Big Sur. Then several miles north, the highway crosses
the scenic
Bixby Creek Bridge, a reinforced concrete arch with a 320-foot span that passes over the Bixby Creek gorge,
and the Rocky Creek Bridge.
In addition to following the coast and passing through the beautiful
Big Sur, Highway 1 is also the route to the Hearst Castle, passes
over the Golden Gate Bridge, is a freeway bypass route around
Monterey, and enters the Point Reyes National Seashore.
Many people consider the Pacific Coast Highway the most scenic
drive in the world and for good reason. It is also one of the most
strenuous if you have a motor home or are pulling a camper. The
route hugs the cliffs for over 100 miles from just north of San
Simeon (home of the
Hearst Castle) to Carmel.
Highway 1 between San Simeon and Carmel was built between
1919 and 1937.
large scale vistas are broken up by sudden turns inland into lush wooded areas
followed by another stretch of cliff-hugging. The coastal cliffs are actually caused
by the mountain range diving straight into the ocean. Heading north you transit
from the scrub covered hills environment of southern California to the lush
wooded environment of Big Sur.
