Cerro Alto
Cerro Alto Campground, located 8 miles east  of Morro Bay on State Highway 41, is a well-known Mountain Bike
paradise. Cerro Alto Campground and trailheads are located off Highway 41, about 5 miles east of Morro Bay. From
San Luis Obispo,  drive north on Highway 1, then east on 41. From North County, head west on 41 in Atascadero.
Watch for the campground sign on your right and either park at the turnoff or drive another mile into the campground
and park in the day-use area. There is a $5 parking fee.
The campground has 22 units, 12 of which are handicapped accessible. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring and
most have a pedestal grill. Several of the sites are walk-in sites.
Fee: $18.00 per night
6-8 persons per site.
Water is available.
Hiking: The direct route to the 2,624-foot high summit is from Cerro Alto Campground via Bridge Trail and
Cerro Alto Upper Trail, 2 1/2 miles one way. With an elevation gain of nearly 1,700 feet, this is a challenge either on
foot or two wheels. Most of the trail is unshaded, so get an early start.
Recent switchbacks have improved the climb, making it ridable for strong cyclists. Several alternatives lengthen
the climb by a mile, lowering the gradient. The easiest route is from the campground up Canyon Trail to the AT&T
powerline easement, then along the easement to Lookout Road and the summit.

Mountain bikers like to descend the easement and Canyon Trail. Hard-core mountain bikers can pedal from SLO
up West Cuesta Ridge, then along TV Tower Road some 16 miles to the summit, a truly epic ride.

meeting information.
Cerro Alto means "high (or difficult) mountain" in Spanish. The 2,620-foot
mountain, located along West Cuesta Ridge in the southern Santa Lucia
mountains, is high enough to afford expansive views of the
Central Coast
from
San Simeon to Point Sal.
